FY 2010 Orphan Sponsorship Summary
About the program
The "Orphan's Fund" is BCRA’s signature program. It was established in 1996 with the goal of providing financial assistance and hope to hundreds of war orphans who lived in precarious circumstances. The program is principled on two main ideas:
- Every dollar donated to an orphan will be delivered without any administrative deductions.
- We are committed to sponsoring the orphan until the age of 18.
The sponsorship process begins by an orphan child registering at the local non-governmental organization (NGO) office in B & H. The NGO officer then submits an application for sponsorship to the BCRA office in Canada and we in turn actively seek a sponsor for the applicant. We promote an active sponsorship model where children write letters to their sponsors describing their circumstances, progress in school, and the way the money is spent. We likewise encourage sponsors to communicate with children they are sponsoring.
Children under the age of 18 receive an annual allowance of $360, while university students receive a $1000 annual stipend. Funds are distributed at the NGO offices in two installments on the first of April and October of each year. Funds are used predominantly for transportation costs, books and school supplies, clothing, and general costs of living.
